I want to understand this place ist ein kurzer Dokumentarfilm über die Transformation des Riebeckplatzes in Halle (a.d.S.). Die Autorin erinnert sich und beobachtet Zustände und Veränderungen. Anhand ihrer Biografie und der städtebaulichen Veränderung des Platzes werden Umbruchszeiten und deren Herausforderungen abgetastet. Der Platz steht als Sinnbild für Zukunftsvisionen und Utopien sowie deren Scheitern.

Der Bau des Zukunftszentrums für deutsche Einheit und europäische Transformation soll die Bevölkerung für die anstehenden gesellschaftlichen Veränderungen vorbereiten sowie Globalisierungsangst und Rechtspopulismus entgegensteuern. Derartige Utopien prägen den Platz und revidieren sich in regelmäßigen Abständen.

Anhand von Archivmaterial wird das Verschwinden von sozialistischer Kunst und Architektur untersucht. Die Dekommunisierung als visueller Vorgang im öffentlichen Raum beschäftigt die Autorin genauso wie ihre ostdeutsche Herkunft, ihre damit verbundene Scham und die aktuellen rechtspopulistischen Montagsdemonstrationen.

I want to understand this place is a short documentary film about the transformation of Riebeckplatz in Halle (a.d.S.). The author remembers and observes conditions and changes. Based on her biography and the urban development changes to the square, times of upheaval and their challenges are explored. The square is a symbol of visions of the future and utopias, as well as their failure.

The construction of the Future Center for German Unity and European Transformation is intended to prepare the population for the upcoming social changes and to counteract fear of globalization and right-wing populism. Such utopias characterize the square and are revised at regular intervals.

The disappearance of socialist art and architecture is examined using archive material. Decommunization as a visual process in public space preoccupies the author as much as her East German origins, the shame associated with it and the current right-wing populist Monday demonstrations.
